Tufts Medicine is a leading healthcare system in Massachusetts, recognized for delivering innovative, high-quality care across a wide range of specialties. As part of a rebrand across four core entities, Tufts Medicine faced a significant digital challenge: a complex, disjointed web ecosystem that was costly to maintain and difficult for users to navigate. To solve this, they turned to Phase2 to lead a full-scale consolidation effort.

Unifying Systems to Drive Efficiency and Impact

At the outset, Tufts Medicine's digital presence spanned more than ten websites across five different CMS platforms (Drupal, Sitecore, WordPress, FarCry, and Wix). This fragmented environment led to inconsistent branding, operational inefficiencies, and a frustrating user experience. 

Phase2 was engaged to design and implement a single, cohesive platform that could:

  • Simplify the user journey across all entities
  • Strengthen and unify the brand identity
  • Reduce technical overhead and platform maintenance costs
  • Provide a scalable foundation for long-term growth and innovation

Driving Measurable Impact Across the System

The resulting digital platform consolidated systems and streamlined operations, empowering Tufts Medicine to manage content centrally through an intuitive interface. It eliminated redundancies across tools like CRM, donation portals, event systems, and scheduling platforms, resulting in immediate cost savings and more efficient workflows for internal teams. 

The patient experience was also transformed. Users now benefit from simplified navigation, integrated provider search, and online scheduling. A chatbot further enhances accessibility by helping users find information quickly and efficiently. 

Most importantly, the new platform is built to scale. It supports the evolving needs of Tufts Medicine, spanning clinical, academic, and research functions and enables ongoing digital innovation across the enterprise.

Positioning for an AI-Driven Future

As the platform matures, Tufts Medicine has shifted its focus from managing the presentation layer alone to investing in the data architecture that powers what AI sees. Patients increasingly arrive on-site having already researched their options through AI-driven tools, meaning the quality of underlying data directly affects whether they find the right care. 

To stay ahead, Tufts Medicine made targeted investments in its data foundation:

  • Standardized formatting across 3,137 provider profiles
  • Normalized data across 1,600+ location listings
  • Built a unified taxonomy connecting providers to specialties, conditions, and procedures
  • Automated updates across multiple source systems to maintain real-time accuracy

The organization is now the first healthcare system to monitor brand presence and consumer sentiment across AI-driven search platforms at a hyper-local level.
